Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is one of the biggest cultural, economic and educational centres in South India. It is the fifth largest city in India. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, Chennai attracts a lot of foreign tourists. Based on a global survey in 2016, Chennai was declared as the safest city in India by Mercer, a global consultancy firm.

Chennai is also known as the "Health Capital of India". 45 % of global health tourists coming to India and 30 to 40 % of domestic health tourists choose Chennai as their treatment destination. The key to Chennai attracting large number of health tourists lies in its robust tertiary healthcare infrastructure, affordable treatment cost and less waiting queue for complex surgeries.
